Welcome note

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the 16th International Epilepsy Colloquium and Course in Frankfurt a.M., Germany. Since 2008, a group of international epilepsy experts from the US, France, Germany, Switzerland the UK and now also from Spain have been organizing highly interactive meetings thematically focused on epilepsy surgery and difficult to treat epilepsies, and characterized by intensive discussions, state of the are talks and detailed case presentations. One important focus will be the interplay of novel techniques (such as sEEG and LITT) and the evolving concepts of epileptogenic zone and networks.

Epilepsy is a frequent, severe chronic neurological disease with increasing prevalence. The brunt of the burden of disease is carried by the pharmacoresistent patients not sufficiently treated by standard medical treatment. They require often complex personalized medicine approaches such as epilepsy surgery and may increasingly profit from emerging, personalized drug or even gene therapy treatment concepts.

Today, we can help many patients with epilepsy surgery. However, this requires experienced epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and comprehensive expertise. This is another reason why The International Epilepsy Colloquium is important. Experts from all over the world in the field of epilepsy surgery meet here every year with the aim of exchanging experiences and the latest findings and learning from each other in order to further improve the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. The Goethe University Frankfurt has long been part of this international community of experts for the last decade and is proud to host the 16th International Epilepsy Colloquium in 2024.

It is important to involve young neurologists, neurosurgeons and pediatricians and support them in becoming expert epileptologists and epilepsy surgeons. This is one of the main motives the IEC has had for the last 16 years. On 17th of September, there will be comprehensive epilepsy course for these younger colleagues. This will be followed by the 16th edition of International Epilepsy Colloquium from September 18–20th on the state of the art and new developments in epilepsy surgery. The unique feature of this congress is the focus on detailed case discussions by the audience and international expert panels.

We look forward to an intensive exchange and fruitful discussions with you!
We cordially invite you to Frankfurt!
